My Musical Journey

I can't give you the exact minute when I first started loving music. It has been in my genes ever since I was born. But yes, the nurturing of my musical senses began with my mom's lullabies. I used to make requests for this song and that when she would take me to bed. That was the beginning.

Ever since then, music has been an integral part of my life. I began singing even before I learnt to speak properly. And my personal budding as a singer began when I first performed. That was a marvelous experience.

In school, I always used to bag the first prize in singing competitions. There have been a few rare occasions, of course, when I went unrewarded. Nevertheless, a roaring applause was always awarded to me after every performance that I gave.

In the year 2007, I first auditioned for Sa Re Ga Ma Pa (Zee Bangla), where I was not selected. It was a lesson, though. The following year, I auditioned for ETV Bangla Tarana where I was a finalist, but had to quit since I had been called to Mumbai for my training and final auditions of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs 2009. I was among the top 54 candidates. But then, I got two horrible attacks of viral fever, which led to a bad and sore throat, which deterred me from giving my best and being among the top 12. But those 15 days at the SRGMP academy were a lifetime asset for me.

Locally too, I have achieved quite a bit of awards. State level prizes in Bhupen Hazarika, Jayanta Hazarika, Parbati Prasad songs and various other genres of songs adorn my showcase. Though the trophies are not with me (since they are running trophies) I have accumulated quite a bit of prize money all by myself.

Although my musical career has been more of achievements, my view of music is independent of whether I get anything in return or not. I believe music is catharsis for the soul. For me, experimentation, crazy improvisations, and appreciation of the beauty of music has been the prime cause of being involved in it. I love ghazals, thumri, jazz, opera and all sorts of classical music. I am crazy for songs sung by Hariharan, Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Michael Jackson. But honestly, I am more inclined to ghazals than anything else. I love the subtleness of the lyrics and the way the qafiya is set. The rules of ghazal are in themselves appreciable. Shayars like Ghalib, Momin, Shahid and Rashid are my personal favorites. Music has a bigger meaning for me. It doesn't mean completing my B.Mus degree and then getting so theoretical about it that I forget the soul of music. I think music should be listened, drunk, absorbed and let flow on. It is something to be felt rather than heard.
